Follow-Up: Vance Leads the Indirect Talks With Iran, Speaking Almost Daily With Qatari and Pakistani Mediators

Vice President JD Vance has spent the past two weeks directly involved in indirect negotiations with Iran, leading a push for a new ceasefire and a restart of nuclear talks, Axios reported on November 6.
Citing sources with direct knowledge, the report said Vance has spoken almost daily with mediators including Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who have been relaying messages between Washington and Tehran. White House envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner are also taking part. Iranian officials told Axios that a letter Vance sent two weeks ago to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, proposing a return to direct negotiations had created positive momentum.
President Donald Trump said on November 6 that the United States is talking to Iran and that things are going well. Two days earlier, Vance had publicly blamed the Iran war in part for the Republicans' midterm election losses and questioned whether the war was worth the cost. Axios reported that in recent months Vance has led a faction within Trump's inner circle advising him to reach a deal to end the war, and privately accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being 'wrong about everything' regarding Iran.
A proposed working-level technical meeting between the two sides has not yet taken place, and Iran is demanding conditions including a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon before further talks, so it remains uncertain whether direct contact can resume in the coming days. (Source: Axios)
