Follow-Up: Iran Says Two More Tankers and a Tugboat Caught Fire in the Strait of Hormuz; UK Agency Reports a Tanker Struck by Two Projectiles off Qatar

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · World · GSM News

Tehran — Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on November 5 that two oil tankers and a tugboat had caught fire in separate incidents after attempting to use unauthorised routes through the Strait of Hormuz: one tanker struck a naval mine while crossing a passage south of the strait, a supertanker caught fire while exiting the waterway's eastern part, and a tugboat that approached the supertanker to help fight the fire also caught fire. Iran's army said separately the same day that three more tankers had struck naval mines and caught fire east of the strait, bringing the Iranian claims for the day to five tankers and a tugboat.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) reported a separate incident the same day: a tanker was struck by two unidentified projectiles about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, at 23:20 GMT on Wednesday. The crew's status and the damage were unconfirmed. Iran's repeated claims of tankers striking mines and catching fire have not been independently confirmed by maritime officials, and are presented here as Iranian claims.

The statements continue a run of near-daily incidents: only the day before, the IRGC had claimed four tankers hit mines south of the strait and said it had seized two vessels. Since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began in late February, Tehran has severely restricted traffic through the strait, which in normal times carries about one-fifth of global oil consumption, and crude flows have fallen from recent highs in recent weeks.
