Salon, a Pioneer Online Magazine, to Cease Publication After 31 Years, Citing an Unsustainable Model

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Culture & Entertainment · GSM News

Salon, the online magazine founded in San Francisco, California, announced on November 5 that it will cease publication, ending a 31-year run as one of the pioneers of digital publishing.

In an unsigned farewell note titled "Goodbye from Salon," the outlet said: "The business realities of independent digital journalism have changed profoundly over the years. After careful consideration, we have reached the difficult decision that our publishing model is no longer sustainable. We know this news will be deeply disappointing to many of you, and we share that sadness." The note called serving its readers "an extraordinary privilege" and recalled how, over three decades, Salon brought together politics, culture, criticism and ideas in a way that was distinctly its own.

Salon was launched on November 20, 1995, by a small group of journalists led by David Talbot, a former editor at the San Francisco Examiner. Barely three years after the internet went mainstream, Salon became one of the earliest web-native magazines, known for sharp political and cultural journalism with a liberal sensibility.

The farewell note did not immediately indicate what would become of its employees or of its immense online archive spanning three decades, though some staff reported they had lost their jobs. The closure comes amid widespread cuts across the media industry driven by technology changes and a volatile advertising market.
