Amtrak Gears Up for a Record Thanksgiving: Extra Cars on Northeast Regional Trains and Two Added Washington-New York Round Trips
Amtrak on November 3 laid out its Thanksgiving travel plan, expecting another record holiday season and urging travelers to book early. Over Thanksgiving 2025, Amtrak carried more than 1.2 million customer trips, up nearly 6 percent from 2024; Thanksgiving is the railroad's busiest travel period.
To add capacity, select Northeast Regional trains will run with additional cars from November 20 to 30, and two extra Northeast Regional round trips will operate between Washington Union Station and New York Penn Station, serving intermediate cities, on November 24-25 and November 28-29.
Amtrak also notes that 15 NextGen Acela trainsets are now in service, more than ever before, and that its new Airo fleet now covers four daily Amtrak Cascades trips in the Pacific Northwest. Interim President Byl Herrmann said tickets are selling quickly and seats on popular departures are limited.
