Migrant Caravan That Set Out From Honduras on Election Day Walks 114 Kilometres Into Guatemala

A migrant caravan of mothers with children, young people and adults set out north from the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula on November 3 and has now walked 114 kilometres into Guatemala, crossing at El Cinchado. It is the third caravan to leave Honduras this year, bound for the southern border of the United States.
According to CNN en Español, the group began forming some 20 days earlier through WhatsApp groups and social media, and set out on November 3 - U.S. midterm election day - before any results existed. Guatemala's National Civil Police collected biometric data from those entering at El Cinchado to register their identities; Guatemala's migration institute has not yet released a count of entries. COFAMIPRO, a Honduran organisation of migrant families that had staff at the departure point, estimated the group at about 500 to 600 people; Agence France-Presse initially reported that dozens set out first, with others joining along the way.
The group plans to reach Tecún Umán in southwestern Guatemala on Friday, join migrants from other countries there and continue north. More than 2,000 kilometres still separate Guatemala from the U.S.-Mexico border.
Members of the caravan learned the U.S. midterm results while already on the road. Santiago, travelling with his wife and three children and twice deported before, said: "We hope that with this change everything improves for us." Another member, Juan, said the outcome motivated them and that they were walking "with more confidence." Amílcar, 65, who has been deported three times, called the Democrats' capture of both chambers of Congress "excellent news" for migrants. Not everyone agreed: Aníbal said Democrats and Republicans "are the same," adding, "If they catch us tomorrow, we will set out again - let's see who tires first, them or us."
The U.S. Department of State warned on October 29, in a post on X, that it would take measures against caravan organisers who facilitate illegal immigration to the United States, and that anyone crossing the U.S. border without authorisation breaks the law and will be detained and deported; the department then imposed visa restrictions on more than 15 organisers.
The caravan has also drawn attention on U.S. television and social media in recent days, with one programme describing it as having set out toward the United States after the Democrats' midterm victory. On the timeline reported by CNN en Español and AFP, the group began forming about 20 days earlier and departed on November 3, before election results existed; members' reactions to the results came while they were already travelling.
