Alabama Sen. April Weaver Elected Senate Majority Leader, First Woman to Hold the Post

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Republican state Sen. April Weaver was elected majority leader of the Alabama Senate on November 5, becoming the first woman in state history to hold the post.

Weaver, who represents District 14 and hails from Brierfield, was chosen by the Senate's 24-member Republican caucus to succeed Steve Livingston. Her term runs from 2026 to 2030 and takes effect immediately. The majority leader coordinates the majority party's legislative agenda and is among the most powerful leadership posts in the state Senate.

A registered nurse, Weaver was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 2010 and served there from 2011 to 2020, chairing the House Health Committee — the first woman to hold that role. She entered the state Senate through a 2021 special election and previously served as a regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Trump.
