Detroit Police Chief Vows to Fix Dysfunction in Crime Scene Unit

DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison has vowed to fix dysfunction inside the department's Crime Scene Services unit, where current and former technicians have described maggots, breeding rabbits and a lack of sterile equipment for gathering and packaging evidence.
At a November 5 meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners, two technicians — Teron Haynes and Margaret Lovallo — reiterated allegations first reported by the Detroit Free Press. Commissioner Darryl Woods Jr. said Bettison is "laser-sharp focused" on the problem and has promised to address it.
The Free Press interviewed nine current and former technicians — four who have left and five still on staff — who described chronic supply shortages, including borrowing gloves from hospitals. Bettison met with the unit on November 3 and promised to improve conditions. Commissioner Eva Garza Dewaelsche said she would keep the unit in mind when budget sessions come up later this month.
