New Orleans City Council Approves Property Tax Increase Worth $23.2 Million a Year

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The New Orleans City Council voted unanimously on November 5 to raise the portion of the property tax rate tied to the general fund to the maximum voters have already approved, a move expected to raise $23.2 million a year toward closing a $100 million budget gap in fiscal 2027.

Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso said the step would shrink the gap to $40 million, and the council would then decide which spending to cut. The city administration team led by Mayor Helena Moreno supports the measure.

Under Louisiana law, tax rates automatically roll back after a property reassessment, and this "roll forward" does not require a new vote of the public. The increase covers only the city government's general fund portion; rates for the school district, the water board, municipal debt and law enforcement districts are unaffected.

The council is set to vote on the final budget plan on November 19.
