Cook County Tax Sale Lists 9,481 Properties, Fewest Since 1994; Sale Opens December 15

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Real Estate · GSM News

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced on November 6 that 9,481 county properties will be listed in this year's annual tax sale opening December 15 — the fewest since at least 1994. Of those, 5,092 are in Chicago and 4,389 in the suburbs, both among the lowest on record. Pappas credited reforms that gave owners more time to pay back taxes, and noted that 2,737 of the properties owe less than $1,000.

The four-day sale covers Tax Year 2023 property taxes due in 2024. State law requires the sale within 13 months of the second-installment due date; it was originally set for September 2025 and was postponed to December 15 to give owners more time. The list of delinquent properties was published on November 4 and 5 in local newspapers and on the Treasurer's website, where owners can still check and pay what they owe to keep a property out of the sale.
