Court Denies Boston Schools' Injunction Bid; English High Football Team Misses Playoffs

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

A Suffolk Superior Court judge, Gillian Feiner, denied Boston Public Schools' request for an injunction on November 6, confirming that the Boston English High School and New Mission High School combined football team will miss this season's playoffs. The dispute arose from an October 30 game between English and O'Bryant High School that BPS did not enter into the scheduling platform used by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) by the September 18 deadline.

BPS argued the association had not correctly applied its own rules and that the game should have counted; without it, English finished 4-2, short of the seven games required to qualify, and the contest was treated as a scrimmage. The judge noted that under the rules schedules are final after the deadline, and that ordering relief would have required reworking the brackets and displacing another qualified school. The MIAA said the postseason will proceed as scheduled.
