FBI Arrests Thomas Markle, Father of Duchess Meghan, Over Child Sexual Abuse Material Found in Los Angeles Storage Units

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on November 6 that Thomas Wayne Markle Sr., 82, was arrested that day by FBI agents at a senior living facility in Lakeland, Florida. Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and father-in-law of Britain's Prince Harry, is charged with one count of possession of child pornography and faces a statutory maximum of 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Markle allegedly kept child sexual abuse material in two Los Angeles-area storage units he rented, including sexually explicit photographs said to depict himself with prepubescent girls. FBI agents executing court-authorized search warrants searched both units and seized approximately 78 items, including slides, 35mm film negatives and books. Prosecutors say Markle had rented the two units since 2008, keeping them for nearly two decades through auto-payments as recent as last month.
“Mr. Markle is accused of possessing child sexual abuse material, including photographs depicting himself with minor girls. These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr. Markle to the fullest extent of federal law,” said Bill Essayli, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. FBI Director Kash Patel also issued a statement on the arrest.
Markle made his initial appearance the same day in U.S. District Court in Tampa, in the Middle District of Florida. A federal magistrate judge ordered him released on home detention with electronic monitoring, restricting his travel to the Middle District of Florida and the Central District of California. He has not entered a plea, and his arraignment in California is not expected for several weeks.
The case grew out of an investigation in the Philippines. According to the complaint and multiple news reports, Markle's son, Thomas Markle Jr., told authorities he had found a large collection of suspected child sexual abuse images at his father's home in Cebu and reported it to police; the Philippine Department of Justice's child abuse unit said the matter is under investigation. Markle lived in Cebu in 2025 and returned to the United States in May of that year for medical care. Florida local media reported that Markle has denied the allegations.
Markle, a retired television lighting director, has been estranged from Meghan for years and did not attend her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Meghan's side offered no comment on the arrest. A criminal complaint is merely an allegation, and Markle is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
