MELBOURNE — The Chinese food-delivery rider killed in a stabbing in central Melbourne has been identified as Jianming Feng, 47, from China's Shaanxi Province, a registered rider for the HungryPanda platform. His wife and family have spoken to Australian media about his life and demanded that the killer be severely punished.

Feng arrived in Australia around 2017 and had not returned to China in nearly nine years. His wife, surnamed Xu, 52, and the couple's two children, both in their twenties, remained in China. Feng supported the household as its main earner through delivery work, and also helped pay for his father, who lives in a nursing home after a stroke, at about 4,000 to 5,000 yuan a month.

Xu said her husband had planned to work another year or two before returning home, possibly in time for their son's wedding. On the day he died, he told her he was busy with deliveries and expected the workload to ease once the school holidays began and Chinese students started heading home. A university student who lives near the scene said Feng delivered food for 10 to 12 hours a day and was a familiar face in the area.

The family has demanded that the killer be brought to justice and severely punished, urged authorities to improve local safety, and asked for help to travel from China to Australia as quickly as possible to handle funeral arrangements. They were expected to arrive in Melbourne on the evening of November 7. The Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne has said it activated its consular protection mechanism and is helping the family, and HungryPanda said it was deeply saddened and had set up a dedicated team to support the rider's family.

According to Victoria Police, at about 8 p.m. on November 6, Feng and another rider confronted a man they had seen tampering with their bicycles on Frederick Way near the Queen Victoria Market. Feng was found with stab wounds and was pronounced dead at about 8:20 p.m. despite paramedics' efforts; the second rider, 34, was also stabbed and taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Homicide detectives arrested a 51-year-old local man in Footscray on the morning of November 7, and police said they were not looking for anyone else. The investigation continues.
