FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for Costco White Chicken Chili Not Presented for Import Reinspection

Shoppers who stocked up on ready-to-eat soup at Costco should check their freezers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert this week for Allen Family Foods' 'White Chicken Chili' with bell peppers, corn, and white beans, which was not presented for import reinspection.
According to FSIS, the ready-to-eat product was imported from Canada and shipped to select Costco stores in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. It was sold in 7-pound, 2-ounce cartons containing eight 14.3-ounce plastic tubs, with lot codes E225077, E225079, E225080, E225081, and E225083.
Because the product is no longer available for purchase, FSIS did not request a formal recall. But the agency is clear that consumers who still have it at home should not eat it; it should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions.
FSIS notes that imported meat and ready-to-eat products must pass reinspection on entry to confirm that labeling, ingredients, and safety status match the import filing, and products that skip that step should not be consumed even without a known contamination. Consumers with food-safety questions can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854. (Source: USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service)
