Argentina Opens Intelligence Recruitment to Ordinary Citizens for the First Time: Milei Cuts 80,000 Jobs but Grows Spy Budget

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World · GSM News

The government of Argentine President Javier Milei has launched a nationwide recruitment campaign to bolster the country's intelligence services, opening the positions to ordinary Argentine citizens through a public competition for the first time.

Candidates must pass general knowledge tests, physical and psychological evaluations, and security checks. Opening intelligence posts to the public is a first in Argentina's history.

The expansion comes as Milei slashes public spending elsewhere: nearly 80,000 public sector jobs have been eliminated in three years, while the budget allocated to intelligence has increased significantly, reaching nearly 176 billion pesos by 2026. Supporters call the build-up a national security necessity; critics question why intelligence is favoured amid general austerity.
