Pope Leo XIV Begins South America Tour: Peru Gets the Longest Six Days, with Helicopter Visits to Remote Andes Communities

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World · GSM News

Pope Leo XIV departed Rome on November 6 for an 11-day tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru ending November 17. The itinerary spends three days in Uruguay, three days in Argentina, and six days in Peru, the longest single leg of the trip.

In Peru, the Pope will travel by helicopter to remote communities in the Andes, meet political leaders and celebrate outdoor Masses. The wider tour includes addresses to officials in all three countries and a prison visit in Argentina, and is regarded as among the busiest papal overseas visits in decades.

The Vatican said the Pope's speeches on the trip will address environmental destruction, arms trafficking and political instability. Peru's large Catholic population is expected to turn out in force, and local churches and authorities have begun preparations for the visit.
