Four Men Killed and Two Injured, Including a 7-Year-Old Child, in Shooting at Cape Town Taxi Rank

CAPE TOWN — South African police confirmed that at about 9 p.m. local time on Saturday, November 7, four gunmen travelling in two vehicles opened fire on people gathered at the long-distance side of the Bellville taxi rank in Cape Town. Four men were shot dead, and another man and a 7-year-old child were wounded, the child seriously.
Lieutenant Colonel Frederick van Wyk of the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit said a manhunt for the four suspects was under way and no arrests had yet been made. Bellville police have registered murder and attempted murder cases. Local media reported that investigators also confiscated a firearm linked to a taxi driver.
The shooting comes amid renewed taxi-industry violence in Cape Town. On November 6 the chairperson of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) was shot and wounded at the Nyanga terminus, days after CATA and the rival Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) agreed on November 2 to a seven-day truce following weeks of deadly violence over disputed routes between Delft, Langa and Epping. Further talks between the associations and government are scheduled for November 10.
