Philadelphia Chinatown 'Stitch' Plan Advances With a Park Capping I-676

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

Philadelphia's Chinatown may be headed for its biggest spatial repair in decades. The city's Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems confirmed this week that the Chinatown Stitch is advancing through design and community engagement: a new park would be built above the sunken Vine Street Expressway (I-676), alongside safety improvements on Vine Street from 9th to Broad streets through the dining and retail heart of Chinatown. Since I-676 was built, it has cut Chinatown in two; the new park aims to reconnect the severed halves — not just green space, but a public space for the neighborhood. Through 2026 the project team has held community engagement events and pop-up consultations in Chinatown, bringing designs back to the neighborhood for feedback; the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC) is a key community force behind the vision, and residents have consistently asked that the park belong to the people who live beside it. The city says it is continuing design and community engagement and encourages residents to keep speaking up through future events and elected officials.
