Upper Arlington Field Hockey Beats Columbus Academy 3-1 for First State Title

Upper Arlington's Golden Bears defeated Columbus Academy 3-1 in the Ohio high school field hockey state final at Thomas Worthington High School on Nov. 7, winning the program's first state championship and ending the heartbreak of two previous finals losses.
Upper Arlington finished the season 17-5-1. In the final, sophomore forward Charlie Rogers opened the scoring, senior forward Caroline Overmyer added an assist and the game-winning goal late in the first quarter, and junior midfielder Sloane Bunk was key defensively, repeatedly breaking up attacks in critical moments. Columbus Academy pulled one back through senior midfielder Charlotte Kurtz with five minutes left in the third quarter, but Upper Arlington withstood four straight penalty corners in the fourth to protect the result.
Columbus Academy finished 18-3-1 in its 25th state tournament appearance, falling short of a 13th title. The teams met on Sept. 16, when Upper Arlington also won 3-1. With this victory, Columbus-area teams have now won 12 straight Ohio field hockey championships, and the final was the fifth in six years between two central Ohio teams.
