$3 Million in Federal Grants to Help Six States Support Family Caregivers, Including California

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The Administration for Community Living (ACL), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has announced the third round of its Advancing State Implementation of the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers grants. Six state units on aging will receive cooperative agreements, and the California Department of Aging is among them, alongside the aging agencies of Illinois and Maryland, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Aging and Independence, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Each project will be funded for 24 months with a budget of up to $490,000, and total funding for this round has increased by $1 million over the earlier rounds, to about $3 million. The project period runs from September 30, 2026, to September 29, 2028. States must focus on at least three of the five goals in the 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers and its forthcoming 2026 update, collaborate with their state developmental disabilities agency, at least one other state agency and a tribe or tribal agency, and emphasize populations with the highest economic and social needs.

ACL notes that more than 63 million family caregivers support older adults and people with disabilities to live in the community each year, and that the need for such care will likely grow as the population ages. The grants are intended to make resources, training and respite support more accessible to those caregivers. (Source: Administration for Community Living)
