Los Angeles — At 12:51 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, a car left the roadway and drove onto the sidewalk outside a grocery store at 4040 W. Washington Boulevard in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, in Los Angeles County, California, injuring multiple pedestrians. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the scene, a few blocks north of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway. A total of 10 patients were assessed at the scene, and eight were taken to local hospitals.

Police said a 3-year-old and a 9-year-old were among those hit, and the 9-year-old was in serious condition. LAFD spokesperson Jennifer Middleton said the ages, genders and conditions of the patients taken to hospitals were not immediately available, and no information about the motorist was released.

The cause remains under investigation. Officials have not said whether the car left the road because of mechanical failure, a medical emergency, driver impairment or an intentional act. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation closed northbound 10th Avenue at 23rd Street, and nearby streets remained closed while investigators processed the scene. The incident is still developing.
