CHICAGO, Illinois — A midterm election review released November 6 by a Chicago Chinese community organization shows turnout in the ward covering Chinatown ran well below the citywide average, with Chinese American civic participation still needing a lift. Hua Bu Jiao Dian (Chinatown Spotlight), published by the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community, reported on November 6 that as of 3 p.m. on November 4, citywide Chicago turnout stood at 42.03%, including 211,657 in-person early voters and 109,215 counted mail ballots, and the Board of Elections had expected turnout to top the 2022 midterms. But the 11th Ward, covering Chinatown and Bridgeport, reached only 35.86%, and the 12th Ward, including McKinley Park and Brighton Park, was about 35.5%. In the core precincts where Chinese residents are concentrated, turnout was lower still: Precinct 1 at 28.52%, Precinct 2 at 22.72% and Precinct 7 at just 20.98%. Despite active mobilization by Chinatown groups before the election, Chinese voter enthusiasm lagged the citywide level; how to raise the community's participation and build stronger political voice remains a challenge the community has yet to crack.
