Ole Miss Responds to Viral Monkey-Noise Doorbell Video: Investigation Under Way, Behavior Called Unacceptable as Views Pass 11 Million

The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), in Oxford, Mississippi, responded on November 8 to the viral video showing two women making monkey noises outside the apartment door of Black freshman Jakiyra Metcalf. According to the New York Post, a university representative said the school is aware of the video and that it is being investigated, and condemned the "offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable behaviors" depicted in it.
The representative said the university has reached out to those targeted by the actions to share information, resources, and support. "We are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors and will follow our processes to ensure the well-being and safety of our community," the representative said. As of publication, the university had not announced any findings or disciplinary action.
The incident took place at about 8:37 p.m. on November 6. A Ring doorbell camera outside Metcalf's apartment recorded three young women walking past; one beat her chest and made monkey gestures and noises, a second made the same sounds toward the camera, and a third walked by. Metcalf posted the clip to TikTok that night, tagging the university. The video had about 9.5 million views when GSM first reported it and has now passed 11 million, with thousands of comments calling on the university to hold the students in the video accountable.
The New York Post reported that social media users have attempted to name the individuals involved, but their identities could not be confirmed; GSM does not publish unconfirmed names. Earlier, the Iota Omega chapter of the Alpha Phi sorority said in a statement that the individuals identified online are not members of Alpha Phi and have never been affiliated with the organization, and condemned racist language and conduct of any kind.
According to the New York Post, a woman who identified herself as the mother of one of the Black students shared the video on Facebook, saying it had reached the university's administration and writing, "We want answers." She called the incident "disgusting and unacceptable" and said college is supposed to be a place where young adults can learn, grow, and feel safe. The Post said neither the university's Equal Opportunity and Regulatory Compliance Office, the University of Mississippi Police Department, nor Metcalf responded to its requests for comment.
