WASHINGTON, D.C. — District of Columbia Mayor-elect Janeese Lewis George shared the latest on her transition team on November 6; she will take office on January 2, 2027, becoming the District's first new mayor since 2015. With counting as of November 6, Lewis George won 156,308 votes, or 84.33%, in the November 3 general election, succeeding Mayor Muriel Bowser, who served 12 years over three terms and did not seek re-election. At a November 4 press conference at the National Press Club, she introduced five transition co-chairs: Gautam Raghavan, former director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel under President Biden; Aaron Jenkins, a former Obama administration official; Beatriz Otero, a former deputy mayor; Greg Akerman, president of the Baltimore-Washington building trades council; and Kimberly Perry, head of DC Action, with Jennifer Levy serving as transition director. Lewis George will immediately face a budget gap of $650 million to $850 million and must submit a fiscal 2028 budget next spring. She said she has engaged the Police Executive Research Forum to help recruit a new police chief, will release a 'listening tour' report in December, and is opening a website to solicit applications for administration jobs.
