FRA Restores St. Louis Quiet Zone Status; Train Horns to Fall Silent Within Days

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — The St. Louis Street Department announced on Friday, November 6, that the Federal Railroad Administration has notified the city that it again meets quiet-zone requirements, and train horns at city crossings will fall silent within days. St. Louis had long held quiet-zone status, but after crossing safety features fell short, the FRA gave notice on September 10 that the city's quiet zones would be suspended and horns resumed. The city then upgraded crossings to federal standards — removing outdated crossing bars, painting stop bars, installing hundreds of new 36-inch signs and submitting documentation crossing by crossing — and the FRA confirmed compliance on November 6 after an expedited review. The reinstatement takes effect immediately, though railroads need several days to update systems and protocols. The city had originally projected finishing in mid-to-late December and completed the work well ahead of schedule. Mayor Cara Spencer praised the Traffic and Lighting crews for finishing early under pressure and putting residents first, saying train horns at all hours were a real disruption and quiet will now return to the city.
