Denis Villeneuve Honored at LACMA Gala: Bond Casting Under Way, No Name Announced

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), in Los Angeles County, California, held its 15th annual Art+Film Gala on the evening of November 7, honoring Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and Latvian-born American artist Vija Celmins. The gala was co-chaired by LACMA trustee Eva Chow and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, their 15th consecutive year in the role, presented by Gucci, and featured a musical performance by Rosé of BLACKPINK. Proceeds support LACMA's initiative to make film more central to its curatorial programming, along with its exhibitions, acquisitions and education programs. Guests from film, art and fashion included Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman and Andrew Garfield.
Introducing Villeneuve, LACMA credited him with establishing himself as one of the most influential directors working today through visually striking, thought-provoking films including the Dune series: Dune: Part One won six Academy Awards, and Dune: Part Two passed $700 million worldwide and won two more. He concludes the trilogy with Dune: Part Three this December and is then set to direct the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios.
Who will play Bond was among the questions on the night's red carpet. Villeneuve told Variety's cameras that he is screening actors for the new film and having a great time doing it. He named no actor and hinted at no frontrunner. Amazon MGM Studios has not officially announced the casting, which remains to be confirmed.
Earlier this month, on November 3, Villeneuve spoke at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles in a conversation with scholar Nina Beguš marking the 10th anniversary of his science-fiction film Arrival. Discussing super intelligence (SI) and creativity, he said computers have so far been tools and that AI cannot replace human creativity, stressing that the value lies in the process, in which a person discovers, understands and grows. AI deals with the past, he said, while creativity is about stepping into the unknown, which only humans can do. (Source: Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Reference: Variety)
