The National Park Service announced on November 4 that Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in Louisiana will host its inaugural Veterans Day luminaria driving tour at Chalmette Battlefield on November 11, when more than 2,000 white luminarias will light up the battlefield to honor the service and sacrifice of America's veterans. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with the last vehicle entry permitted at 7:30 p.m., and there is no entrance fee.

Displays will be placed at the Chalmette Monument, the Malus-Beauregard House and the American flagpole, and the driving tour will feature an audio program commemorating the service and sacrifice of U.S. service members, past and present. "We are honored to recognize the veterans laid to rest at the national cemetery, as well as all who served, through our first-ever driving tour with luminaria," said park Superintendent Rebecca Lasell. "We hope you will join us in remembering and celebrating our veterans with gratitude."

Chalmette Battlefield preserves the site of the Battle of New Orleans, the final major battle of the War of 1812 and a defining chapter in the nation's military history. Illuminated entirely with white luminarias, the event supports the National Park Service's commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary by connecting visitors with the places and stories that shaped the United States, and it is part of the Great American Expedition.

The tour is presented in partnership with St. Bernard Parish, the Daughters of the War of 1812, the Sons of the War of 1812, the Daughters of the British Empire, Buffalo Soldiers 9th Cavalry and 25th Infantry and the Historic Tremé Jazz Museum. Chalmette Battlefield is located at 1 Battlefield Road in Chalmette. (Source: National Park Service)
