Sunday, November 8, 2026 · Events · GSM News

ROANOKE, Virginia — Virginia's largest Veterans Day parade was held in downtown Roanoke on November 7, with veterans, families and residents lining the streets to honor service members and military families. The procession moved through downtown streets beneath waving flags as crowds waved to passing veterans in a solemn yet warm atmosphere. Retired Navy Rear Admiral John Butler traveled in to serve as the parade's reviewing officer. Mayor Joe Cobb said the parade thanks service members for their service and also remembers the sacrifices of military families, a tribute the community renders this way every year. Veterans Day falls on November 11 each year, marking the 1918 armistice that ended World War I, and communities usually hold commemorations on the weekends around it; Roanoke's is the largest in the state. Held annually, the parade is the centerpiece of Roanoke's Veterans Day observances and draws large crowds along the route.
