Haitian Third-Grader Taken into Federal Custody After San Diego Immigration Check-In; District Asks Not to Send Him Far Away

SAN DIEGO, California — An 8-year-old Haitian third-grader was taken into federal custody this week after an immigration check-in in San Diego; his whereabouts are now unknown and he has been placed in the federal system for unaccompanied minors. The boy attends Fay Elementary School in San Diego's City Heights neighborhood and had been cared for by his uncle since his father was deported more than a year ago. The uncle brought him to meet immigration officials as a letter required, but the child did not come home with him. San Diego Unified School District wrote on November 6 to the secretaries of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services, saying the district cannot learn where the child is and that it has sent crisis counselors to the boy's school to comfort frightened classmates. The district noted the boy previously held Temporary Protected Status. DHS responded that Immigration and Customs Enforcement determined the boy to be an unaccompanied minor and transferred him to the Office of Refugee Resettlement. In their letter, district and city leaders asked that detained children be placed as close as possible to their schools and that districts be consulted before students are transferred.
