San Francisco's Free Repair Events Come to the Library Nov. 7: Clothing and Bike Fixes at No Charge

SAN FRANCISCO, California — The free repair events familiar to San Francisco's Chinese community continue this Saturday. The San Francisco Environment Department and the San Francisco Public Library rotate free clothing and bicycle repair sessions among branch libraries: on Saturday, November 7, the clothing repair session runs 3 to 5 p.m. at the Park Branch, 1833 Page Street, and the bicycle repair session runs 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Beach Branch, 850 Columbus Avenue. Everything is free, with skilled volunteers teaching repair techniques on the spot; bring broken small items and torn clothes to fix together — the idea is saving money, throwing less away and doing it yourself.
Organizers say San Francisco is in the middle of a repair café wave, with residents bringing household items to fix alongside volunteers. Bicycle repair does not currently include full wheel replacement. Beyond the library rotation, the Haight-NOPA Repair Café is set for Saturday, December 13, 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Park Branch, and the Mission Repair Café for January 31, 2 to 4:30 p.m., at a venue to be announced.
The events are especially handy for Chinese families, many of whom have clothes and bikes needing small fixes. Organizers note that capacity and repair offerings depend on on-site arrangements, and advise arriving early. The free community service reflects San Francisco's push on waste reduction and reuse, extending the life of everyday items through hands-on repair.
