New Hampshire Attorney General Orders Halt to Anonymous Campaign Mailers

CONCORD, N.H. — Attorney General John Formella has ordered two political consulting firms to stop distributing anonymous campaign mailers that violate state election disclosure laws, his office announced ahead of the November 3 election.
The mailers — commissioned by Washington, D.C.-based Pinpoint Campaigns and produced by Massachusetts printer Journeyman Press — targeted U.S. Senate candidates including Republican John Sununu and Constitution Party candidate Edmond LaPlante, and carried none of the "paid for" disclaimers required by state law, RSA 664:14. The attorney general's office confirmed the candidates' campaigns had no coordination with the materials.
State law requires political advertising to clearly identify the sponsoring candidate or committee. The office's Election Law Unit has opened an investigation; it handled 83 election-related inquiries during the primary cycle and investigated three anonymous mailers. The office expects to produce related documents by November 16.
