Follow-Up: Kremlin Confirms Oleshky Ceasefire Deal; Russian and Ukrainian Militaries Working on Implementation Dates

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · World · GSM News

MOSCOW — The Kremlin on Friday, October 23, confirmed that a US-brokered local ceasefire agreement had been struck regarding the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky, adding that the Russian and Ukrainian militaries were working to determine the dates for implementing it. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that all civilians wishing to leave Oleshky would be allowed to do so, and that the evacuation operation itself was expected to take at least several days.

Peskov praised US First Lady Melania Trump's role in securing the agreement, saying the matter had been discussed in a recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. "We welcome the efforts of the First Lady of the United States, Mrs Melania Trump, who has made a significant contribution to the coordination of the humanitarian operation," Peskov said.

The White House said earlier on Friday that Melania Trump had secured the localized ceasefire: both nations agreed to temporarily stop all military action in Oleshky to allow humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway, beginning October 29. GSM reported the White House statement earlier in the day; the Kremlin's confirmation gives the deal formal Russian endorsement and moves it into the implementation phase.
