Orange County's Norte Fire Burns 250 Acres; Evacuations Ordered in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, Four Homes Impacted

SAN CLEMENTE — A fast-moving brush fire, the Norte Fire, broke out around midday Friday, Oct. 16, in southern Orange County. According to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), the fire started at about 11:30 a.m. near the 3000 block of Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente; it was reported at 50 acres with structures threatened by 12:30 p.m. and grew to 250 acres by 1:12 p.m., with containment at 0 percent.
OCFA confirmed on X that four homes off Via La Mira in San Juan Capistrano had been impacted by the fire; structures off Via Entrada, Avenida Calita and Via De Agua were threatened, and television aerials showed homes burning. No injuries had been reported as of publication, and the cause was unknown.
Evacuation orders (go now) covered San Juan Capistrano Zones 4, 5 and 10 and San Clemente Zones 12 and 13, with surrounding zones under evacuation warnings. Two shelters were opened: the San Juan Capistrano Community Center (25925 Camino del Avion) and the San Clemente Community Center (100 Calle Seville).
Interstate 5 was hard-closed between San Juan Creek Road and Camino De Los Mares, and a closure was requested for Avenida La Pata south of Ortega Highway.
Nine Capistrano Unified School District schools dismissed students early on Friday, including Bernice Ayer Middle School, Clarence Lobo, Concordia and Harold Ambuehl elementary schools, San Clemente High School, San Juan Hills High School, Shorecliffs Middle School, Truman Benedict Elementary and Vista Del Mar; elementary students were to be picked up by parents at school.
Crews were attacking the fire from the ground and air, with mutual-aid requests including 50 Type-1 engines, 15 Type-3 wildland engines, three hand crews and six bulldozers. Santa Ana winds, heat and dry conditions were fueling the fire, with red flag warnings and heat advisories in effect across the Southland; the incident is developing.
