Norte Fire in Orange County Reaches First Containment: 570 Acres, 5% Contained; Evacuation Orders Remain

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · California · GSM News

ORANGE COUNTY — In an incident update posted at 8:07 a.m. on October 17, CAL FIRE reported that crews worked through the night attacking the Norte Fire and strengthening containment lines: the fire remains at 570 acres and is now 5% contained, the first containment figure reported since the fire ignited at midday on October 16. Six homes have been damaged or destroyed, as previously reported, and the cause remains under investigation. Crews will continue working on October 17 to increase containment and get residents back home as soon as it is safe to do so.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for zones SCL12 and SCL13 in San Clemente and SJC04, SJC05 and SJC10 in San Juan Capistrano, covering roughly 4,600 homes and 16,000 people, as previously reported. Evacuation shelters remain open at the Boys and Girls Club, 1 Via Positiva, and the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, 25925 Camino del Avion, in San Juan Capistrano, and at the San Clemente Community Center, 100 Calle Seville, in San Clemente. Orange County Fire Authority Deputy Incident Commander Battalion Chief Mike Yeun said in a late-night update on October 16 that all evacuation orders would remain in effect overnight while crews protected homes and worked to keep the fire in its current footprint, with community and firefighter safety as the first objective and returning residents home, once safe, as the second.

The fire ignited just after 11:30 a.m. on October 16 in the San Clemente area, south of San Juan Capistrano, and spread rapidly under strong Santa Ana winds, dry vegetation and elevated temperatures, with acreage reported at 465 acres and then 570 acres during the afternoon and containment at zero throughout October 16. Two firefighters were previously taken to hospitals with heat-related injuries. California has secured a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA for the fire, providing 75% reimbursement of eligible suppression costs, and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services pre-positioned additional engines, a water tender, a helicopter and personnel in Orange County ahead of the fire weather.
