Update: Norte Fire Holds at 570 Acres, Containment Still at 0 Percent; Six Homes Damaged, Evacuation Orders in Place for About 16,000 People

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · California · GSM News

The Orange County Fire Authority reported on Friday evening, October 16, that the Norte Fire, burning in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano area, had grown to 570 acres with zero percent containment; six homes had been destroyed or damaged, and evacuation orders covered roughly 4,600 homes and 16,000 people. In CAL FIRE's latest incident update, posted at 10:35 p.m. Pacific Time on Oct. 16, the fire remained at 570 acres with containment still at 0 percent, and all evacuation orders remained in effect. The fire ignited shortly after 11:30 a.m. on October 16 near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente and spread rapidly, driven by strong Santa Ana winds, dry vegetation and high temperatures. Its cause remains under investigation.

Evacuation orders cover San Juan Capistrano zones 4, 5 and 10 and San Clemente zones 12 and 13. Fire Authority Chief TJ McGovern said at a Friday evening briefing that evacuations would remain in place through the night and that crews' objective was to keep the fire within its current footprint. Two firefighters were taken to area hospitals with heat-related injuries and were reported stable. Officials said most of the fire had been knocked down by Friday evening, though winds remained strong and conditions volatile.

Care and reception centers in both cities are open Saturday, October 17, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.: the San Juan Capistrano Community Center at 25925 Camino del Avion and the San Clemente Community Center at 100 Calle Seville. An overnight shelter is operating at the Boys & Girls Club at 1 Via Positiva in San Juan Capistrano, where animals are allowed. A Friday night high school football game at San Clemente High School was also canceled because of the fire. (GSM, based on Orange County Fire Authority and Cal Fire updates)
