Update: Norte Fire in Orange County Reaches 90% Containment; Size Holds at 570 Acres
ORANGE COUNTY, California — The Norte Fire, burning in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano area of Orange County, California, moved a step closer to full containment. CAL FIRE's official incident page updated at 7:04 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20: the fire is now 90% contained, with its size unchanged at 570 acres; the page's last-updated stamp reads 7:05 a.m., and the previous official figure, at 4:33 p.m. on October 19, stood at 80%.
According to the incident page, resources assigned now total 583 personnel, 67 engines, 13 hand crews, 11 helicopters, one dozer and one water tender, with numerous firefighting air tankers from across the state flying suppression missions as conditions allow. All evacuation orders were lifted effective 6 p.m. on October 17; only two closures remain: Via La Mirada stays closed north of Esperanza to allow crews to keep working, and the burn scar remains closed as an active fire hazard area until further notice. The incident is under the jurisdiction of the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).
The fire broke out at 11:33 a.m. on October 16 near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente. Its containment sequence: 5% on the morning of October 17 and 25% that evening, 50% and then 60% on October 18, 75% and then 80% on October 19, and 90% today. According to earlier OCFA briefings, seven homes were damaged or destroyed and two firefighters were taken to hospital with heat-related injuries and later reported stable; the cause remains under investigation.
