Follow-Up: Orange County's Norte Fire Revised to 570 Acres, Still 0% Contained; Evacuation Orders Unchanged

Friday, October 16, 2026 · California · GSM News

Officials revised the size of Orange County's Norte Fire again on the evening of October 16. Aerial mapping by FIRIS, the state's fire-intelligence program, put the fire — burning between San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano — at 570.3 acres (officially 570 acres) as of 7:37 p.m., up from the previously reported 465 acres. Containment remained 0% in the 7 p.m. update, and crews' objective is to hold the fire within its current perimeter.

Evacuation orders are unchanged: zones SCL12, SCL13, SJC04, SJC05 and SJC 10 remain under mandatory (Level 3 "Go") orders. The overnight shelter at the Boys & Girls Club in San Juan Capistrano (1 Via Positiva) remains open and accepts animals, and care-and-reception points at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center (25925 Camino del Avion) and the San Clemente Community Center (100 Calle Seville) are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Officials say residents will be notified when repopulation is safe.

The fire ignited shortly after 11:30 a.m. on October 16 and spread quickly in Santa Ana winds and dry brush, growing from 250 to 465 acres earlier in the day. California has secured a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant for the fire, covering 75% of eligible suppression costs, as reported in GSM's earlier coverage.
