Follow-Up: iPhone Duo Sells Out in New York on Launch Day: Resale Listings Reach $10,000

NEW YORK — In New York City, New York County, Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale on Friday, October 23. According to the New York Post, a long line had formed outside the Fifth Avenue flagship store as early as 4:15 a.m., with social media video showing a "massive queue." By about 10 a.m., the store was reportedly out of stock for walk-in customers, with remaining stock going to pre-orders. At the World Trade Center store, employees began taking orders at 6 a.m., by which point about 200 people were already in line.

Scarcity quickly fueled resale markups. Just after 9 a.m., one eBay reseller listed a 2TB Night Sky iPhone Duo for $8,000, while another posted one for $10,000 — more than three times the $3,199 purchase price, according to the Post. A New York-based seller on Craigslist listed one at $7,999, and one eBay buyer purchased a 1TB Star White model listed at $5,200 with overnight shipping.

The hinged device is Apple's first entry into the foldable phone market, with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer screen, the Post reported. Demand had already overwhelmed pre-orders, which sold out shortly after opening on October 16 and pushed delivery dates back.
