Norte Fire Update: Overnight Shelter Opens as Officials Say Two Firefighters Were Hospitalized in Stable Condition
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. — Orange County Fire Authority officials said at an evening briefing on October 16 that two firefighters had been injured fighting the Norte Fire, taken to area hospitals and were in stable condition; the nature of the injuries was not specified. The afternoon count had been one firefighter treated for mild heat exhaustion.
Fire Chief TJ McGovern said evacuation orders cover roughly 4,600 homes and about 16,000 people, with the same five zones — SCL12, SCL13, SJC04, SJC05 and SJC10 — still under orders, and about 400 firefighters assigned. Most of the fire has been knocked down, but containment remains 0%, and six homes have been damaged or destroyed. Cal Fire's incident page still lists 465 acres, while the Watch Duty platform's latest perimeter mapping measures about 570.3 acres; the two figures use different measurement methods and await the next official update. An overnight shelter has opened at the Boys & Girls Club, 1 Via Positiva in San Juan Capistrano, with animals allowed, and OC Animal Care has opened an emergency animal shelter at 1630 Victory Road in Tustin.
