Follow-Up: Daylight Saving Time Ends Tonight, Set Clocks Back an Hour Before Bed

Tonight is the last night of daylight saving time this year. Under the official guidance of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), areas that observe daylight time will end it at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, turning clocks back one hour to 1 a.m. and returning to standard time. Set your clocks before bed tonight and you gain an extra hour of sleep in the morning.
GSM set out the key points on October 19: daylight time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November; Hawaii, most of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and territories including Puerto Rico and Guam stay on standard time year-round and do not change their clocks. The next change comes on March 14, 2027, when clocks spring forward again.
Many readers ask whether this could be the last clock change. As of October 31, there is no new movement on the legislation: according to Congress.gov, the Sunshine Protection Act (H.R.139), passed by the House in July, was received in the Senate on July 15 and remains in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, with no further action recorded. Until a bill becomes law, the twice-yearly change stays in place, and tonight's fall-back goes ahead as scheduled.
Tonight's checklist is short. Clocks that need a manual reset are mostly older wall and mantel clocks, bedside alarm clocks, the clocks on microwaves, ovens and coffee makers, and some car clocks: turn each one back an hour before bed. Phones, computers, tablets and smartwatches update on their own when connected. If you have a flight, an appointment or a gathering tomorrow morning, double-check the time on your phone before heading out, in case a household clock was missed.
As fire departments have long advised, the clock change is also a good moment to test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at home: a GSM report today carries detailed reminders from Wisconsin Emergency Management.
