Follow-Up: Trump Says He Is Open to a Trilateral Meeting With Xi and Putin Focused on Denuclearization

Monday, October 19, 2026 · White House · GSM News

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump told reporters outside the White House on October 19 that he is open to participating in a trilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that it could be focused on denuclearization.

"We would have it to talk about nuclear weapons and denuclearization," Trump said. "If President Xi wants to have it, I'd have it."

Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin said Putin, Trump and Xi could hold a three-way meeting on the sidelines of next month's APEC summit in China, and that a potential meeting had come up in talks.

GSM reported on October 18, citing The Wall Street Journal, that Putin had proposed a trilateral summit next month with Trump and Xi to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Trump's remarks are the first public U.S. response to that proposal, and they point the agenda toward nuclear weapons and denuclearization. On October 16, Trump also said the United States was discussing denuclearization with Russia and China and that he had raised the subject with Beijing. (GSM, via Reuters)
