Follow-Up: Six-Day Kherson Ceasefire Expires: Kyiv Says Russia Declined an Extension as 167 More People Are Evacuated

The six-day localized ceasefire in Ukraine's southern Kherson region expired on November 1. According to Reuters and AFP, Ukraine's parliamentary commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, said the ceasefire, which was in effect from October 27 to November 1, has ended. A senior official in the Ukrainian presidency told AFP that Ukraine's foreign ministry had presented a proposal to extend the ceasefire, but that Russia did not want to.
The truce, brokered by U.S. first lady Melania Trump with the involvement of Pope Leo XIV, was the longest local pause in fighting since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It took effect early on October 27, covered Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region, and held without reported violations by either side; a Ukrainian lawmaker described it as the biggest de-escalation since 2022.
During the pause, a rare humanitarian operation moved residents out of Oleshky in batches, ending on Saturday; an estimated 2,000 civilians were in Oleshky when the truce took hold. Ukraine's military said it evacuated another 167 people from threatened areas of the Kherson region on Sunday. Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin urged residents to be vigilant as the expiry neared.
Writing on X, Melania Trump said the ceasefire had provided residents with the freedom to move, access to food, clean water and medicine, and a renewed sense of dignity without the constant threat of attack, adding: let Oleshky become the starting point for lasting peace.
Outside the ceasefire zone, the fighting never stopped. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Russia continues to target Ukraine's energy systems ahead of winter, leaving hundreds of thousands of families without power overnight.
