Follow-Up: Hidden Hills Activates Ordinance 393 Fire-Risk Bans as Red Flag Warning Covers Santa Monica Mountains

The City of Hidden Hills has notified residents that the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Santa Monica Mountains, including the city. The city's notice lists the warning period as 6:00 a.m. Thursday, October 15, through 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 16, unless extended. In its updated warning issued Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service office in Los Angeles/Oxnard lists the current Red Flag Warning for the Santa Monica Mountains as running through 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 17. The warning is part of the current Santa Ana wind event, for which California has pre-positioned firefighting resources and the City of Pasadena has activated its own red flag parking restrictions.
The Weather Service said northeast to east winds of 20 to 40 mph with gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected in the Santa Monica Mountains, strongest Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon, with relative humidity dropping to minimums of 8 to 20 percent and dry vegetation; any fire that starts is likely to spread rapidly and behave erratically.
According to the city, under its Ordinance No. 393, the following activities are prohibited citywide for the full duration of any National Weather Service Red Flag Warning: use of portable outdoor barbecue grills; use of fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, or any other outdoor fire or open flame; any outdoor activity that could produce a spark or flame; use of gasoline- or propane-powered equipment for property maintenance or repairs, including but not limited to lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, chippers, grinders, welding devices and portable generators; and outdoor smoking of tobacco, cannabis or any other inhalable product. Exemptions include generators used for emergency or medical purposes, permanently installed standby generators, and gasoline-powered pumps used for fire protection. The city's red flag page states that Ordinance No. 393 took effect on April 9, 2025, making Hidden Hills the first city in the region to implement such enforceable restrictions on fire-risk activities during Red Flag Warnings, developed in coordination with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The city said residents with gardeners, tree trimmers, contractors or other service providers scheduled for Thursday or Friday should contact them now to cancel or reschedule; notices will be posted at the gates, and workers arriving to perform prohibited activities will be turned away. City Hall can be reached at (818) 888-9281 or [email protected], and residents can sign up for emergency alerts at ready.lacounty.gov.
