SACRAMENTO — The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) said on October 16 that it has prepositioned firefighting resources across the state ahead of Santa Ana winds and elevated fire weather. As of 9 a.m. on October 16, a total of 69 fire engines, 371 personnel and 5 helicopters had been deployed to 14 counties, with prepositioning under way since October 14.

Southern California received the largest share: the City and County of Los Angeles received 15 engines, 2 bulldozers, 2 water tenders, 2 hand crews, 2 helicopters and 86 personnel; Ventura County 5 engines and 50 personnel; Orange County 5 engines and 45 personnel; San Diego County 5 engines and 40 personnel; San Bernardino County 5 engines plus a hand crew and 37 personnel; and Riverside County 5 engines and 17 personnel.

The remaining counties receiving prepositioned resources are Santa Barbara, Napa, Nevada, Tehama, Tuolumne, Plumas, Lake and Sierra. Cal OES also coordinated a law enforcement mutual aid squad of one sergeant and 12 officers assigned to Pasadena, Glendale and Sierra Madre to assist with possible evacuations.

The deployment expands the response to this week's Santa Ana wind event: on October 14, the state had initially prepositioned resources in four Southern California counties, and the footprint has now grown to 14 counties statewide.
