Saturday, October 17, 2026 · California · GSM News

Temecula — Temecula is a city in Riverside County, California. Rashad Kysim Populus, 28, of Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty on October 16 to first-degree murder and other charges in the shooting death of Shaquilah Kaprise Howard, 30, of Temecula, MyNewsLA reported. Populus is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations, and parole violations.

Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Carlos Mendoza said that at 7:30 a.m. on October 4, Populus was involved in a dispute with Howard at her apartment in the 28000 block of Colorado Avenue, near Las Haciendas Street, and shot her during the confrontation. Witnesses called 911, and deputies found Howard mortally wounded; she was pronounced dead at the scene. Central Homicide Unit detectives identified Populus, and he was arrested hours later at a residence in Oxnard.

The Sheriff's Department said Populus had been released on parole on September 24, stemming from a conviction for assault with a firearm. Superior Court Judge Judith Clark scheduled a felony settlement conference for December 1 at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta. Populus is being held in lieu of $3 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center.
