Typhoon Champi to Enter Philippine Area on Tuesday; PAGASA Warns of Signal No. 3 or 4 for Northern Luzon

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

MANILA — Typhoon Champi weakened slightly over the sea west of Guam, the Philippine weather bureau PAGASA said in its 11 p.m. bulletin on Sunday, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kph with gusts of up to 215 kph. Its center was estimated 1,830 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon, moving west-northwestward at 15 kph, still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

PAGASA expects Champi to enter the PAR on Tuesday morning or early afternoon, October 20, when it will be given the domestic name 'Rosal.' Tropical cyclone wind signals may be raised over the northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon and the eastern section of the Bicol Region as early as Monday evening or Tuesday morning, and under the current forecast scenario the highest signal could reach No. 3 or 4. From Wednesday, gusty conditions may affect most of Luzon and the Visayas and parts of Mindanao, with heavy rainfall possible over Extreme Northern Luzon.

After entering the PAR, Champi is expected to move toward Taiwan while remaining over the Philippine Sea, and PAGASA said a landfall in the Philippines remains unlikely. Moderate to rough seas are expected off Luzon's northern and eastern seaboards from Tuesday, with a gale warning possible on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

GSM previously reported that Champi intensified near Guam over the weekend, with the Joint Typhoon Warning Center measuring sustained winds of 150 mph at its peak so far.
