Typhoon Champi Skirts Taiwan: Work and Classes Suspended Almost Island-Wide on October 23, Hundreds of Flights Cancelled

TAIPEI — Typhoon Champi skirted waters northeast of Taiwan on October 23, with work and classes suspended almost island-wide on Friday and financial markets closed; only Kinmen operated as normal, Reuters reported. Schools were shut and government offices and most businesses stopped work.
On transport, Taiwan's authorities said all 262 domestic flights scheduled for Friday were cancelled, along with more than 350 international flights, while some ferry and rail services were also affected. The weather agency said Champi packed gusts of about 191 km/h, with the storm centred roughly 330 km east of Taiwan's southernmost point and a radius of about 320 km; it was expected to track north after passing offshore of the northeast.
Taiwan had earlier issued a land warning for Champi, with northern mountain areas on guard against torrential rain. Disaster agencies continued to monitor rainfall and damage and urged the public to avoid mountain and coastal areas.
