Follow-Up: Super Typhoon Champi Approaches; Sea Warning Possible Tuesday Night, Land Warning Wednesday Night
Super Typhoon Champi continues to strengthen as it moves west-northwest, and Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA) estimates it may issue a sea warning as early as Tuesday night (Oct. 20), with a land warning possible on Wednesday night (Oct. 21), depending on the storm's track and speed. The CWA said Champi is currently over waters west of Guam and heading toward the Luzon Strait to the seas east of Taiwan, though its path remains uncertain. Winds and waves around Taiwan will build from Tuesday, with long swells likely along the northern and eastern coasts, and rain chances rising island-wide from Wednesday to Friday, including a risk of locally heavy rain in mountain areas. Vessels at sea were urged to stay alert. GSM previously reported that Champi brushed southern Guam over the weekend; the Philippine weather bureau expects it to enter the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday, with possible signal No. 3 or 4 for northern Luzon.
