Follow-up: Typhoon Champi Sweeps Past Taiwan, Killing 1 and Injuring 527; Over 288,000 Homes Lost Power and 259 Flights Were Cancelled Saturday

Typhoon Champi swept past Taiwan's northeastern coast on Saturday, weakening as it turned north, Reuters reported on October 24. Taiwan's fire department said the storm had killed one person and injured 527: the fatality was a man swept away by waves from the island of Liuqiu. The injury figure updates the 163 reported earlier by this newsroom as the count widened.
Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said Champi was about 170 kilometres (106 miles) northeast of Taiwan on Saturday, packing gusts of about 126 kph (78 mph) near its centre, while gusts along the coast had touched 227 kph (141 mph), downing trees and power lines. The storm's centre had looped offshore near Yilan County around midnight before moving away to the north.
Taipower said more than 288,000 homes had lost electricity, though most had been reconnected. Taiwan's transport ministry said 259 flights were cancelled on Saturday, down from almost 1,000 on Friday. Offices and schools were closed for a second day across much of northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei.
Champi was at one point among the strongest storms on Earth this year, with peak sustained winds of 178 mph (286 kph); more than 2,600 people were evacuated as it approached Taiwan on October 23. The forecast track takes the weakening storm north along the Chinese coast, without an expected landfall there, before it curves toward southern Japan; rescue forces in China's Zhejiang Province have been placed on standby.
