Follow-Up: St. Louis Pauses Police Chief Tracy's Pay Raise, Citing Legal Concerns

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — The mayor's office announced on Friday, October 23, that the City of St. Louis is pausing the pay raise for Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Tracy, citing legal concerns, FOX 2 (KTVI) reported. It is the city's first intervention since the dispute over Tracy's pay erupted. The mayor's office has not specified the legal basis for the pause or a timeline for what follows.
The controversy stems from the state-appointed St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners' October 17 decision, taken at a special meeting, to extend Tracy's contract through 2030 and raise his salary to $295,000 — an increase of about $110,000. Mayor Cara Spencer criticized the decision as "haphazard and secretive" and questioned whether it conflicts with the goal of hiring more front-line officers.
In a separate development the same day, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe's office announced on October 23 that the governor has asked the state attorney general to investigate whether the police board violated the state Sunshine Law's open-meetings requirements around its October 17 meetings — a distinct action from the city's pause of the raise.
