Missouri Gov. Kehoe Asks Attorney General to Investigate St. Louis Police Board over Chief's Contract Extension

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Office of Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced on October 23 that the governor has formally requested that Attorney General Catherine Hanaway conduct a thorough investigation of the St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners for potential violations of the state's Sunshine Law (open meetings law) during meetings held on or about October 17. The board fast-tracked a contract extension for police Chief Robert Tracy in what the governor described as a closed-door process; the department announced on October 17 that the new agreement extends Tracy's tenure through October 2030.

"While I remain supportive of the authority of the citizen-led St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners, their recent decision to fast-track Chief Tracy's contract extension during a closed door, non-transparent process raises serious concerns," Kehoe said. "Taxpayers, who fund the department, deserve complete transparency. I am requesting our state's chief law enforcement officer initiate a thorough investigation into potential violations of open meeting requirements during this contract negotiation and take any necessary enforcement actions to ensure full compliance with the law."

"As a proud born-and-raised St. Louisan who was brought up in the police family, I care deeply about the rank-and-file officers and civilian employees of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and support the board operating within the process established by law," he added.
